I love Torchwood, I love science, I love Radio 4 and I equally love it when you get all of those things put together in celebration of a major scientific breakthrough – The Big Bang!
Basically BBC Radio 4 is going to be marking the day CERN attempt to discover what life was like at the start of the universe by recreating the aftermath of the Big Bang.
Radio 4 will join CERN on 10 September with Andrew Marr in the CERN control room for the turning on, a team of experts and a range of related programming throughout the day.
In fact it will be more than just that day – the whole event will start on Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 September with a two part history of the CERN project hosted by Quetin Cooper (9pm).
On the day things kick off at 6am with as Andrew Marr reports into the Today programme from the CERN control room ahead of switch-on at around 8.30am.
Then it moves to a show giving more details into the CERN facility. The legend that is Adam Hart-Davies will present a look at the engineering and aparatus used by CERN (9-9.45am).
Next in Physics Rocks CERN physicist and former member of D:Ream tracks down well known celebrity physics enthusists in a comparison between the world of Rock and Roll and Physics asking the question ‘Is Physics the new Rock and Roll?’.
It will include guests like Alan Alda, Ben Miller, Eddie Izzard, Dara O’Briain and John Barrowman and sets up the next programme – a special edition of Torchwood.
Here is a trailer for Torchwood
Anyway there is a LOT more going on throughout the day – you can read them all on the Big Bang Day programmes page.
Some of the questions due to be asked during the course of the day includes: ‘Will the Collider be able to prove to scientists that many other dimensions exist as well as ours?’ ‘What are the possibilities of multiple Big Bangs creating multiple parallel universes?’ ‘Why would scientists want to risk the planet in this way?’
The experiment is one of the most complex and significant of modern times – and one that raises a lot of questions!
Anyway here is a brief biog on Torchwood: “Torchwood comes to Radio 4 in a specially-commissioned drama. Martha Jones, ex-time traveller and now working as a doctor for a UN task force, has been called to CERN. Join Captain Jack and friends in a series of strange events around the activation of the world’s largest particle accelerator.”

Why would scientists risk Earth? Why would general Custer fight without backup at the Little Big Horn.
Read why I believe Dr. Otto E. Rossler may be one the greatest theoretical physicists alive today and why Dr. Rossler and other scientists are concerned that CERN may be leading Earth to a Little Big Horn battle against Mother Nature at LHCFacts.org.
