Elf and Safety

Jeremy Clarkson has been going a bit rant heavy recently in his Sunday Times and Sun columns. That’s not unusual as those columns are regularly rant heavy - what’s different is that the rants are an extreme dig at Health and Safety - even James May is at it.

This jumped out at me because, just last week I had to spend an HOUR at a Health and Safety Course. That’s one whole HOUR of time I could be writing stories, doing research, preparing my show, interviewing people or even just sticking my head in a microwave.

OK so an hour might not seem that long - it isn’t - I’ve been to health and safety courses that have taken three hours plus before. In fact everyone that starts at the BBC has to do a health and safety course online that takes the best part of two days.

Alright you do get to see Anthea Turner blown up but it’s a VERY small reward for such a gruelling piece of pointless bureaucratic bollocks.

What’s so annoying about this hour I had to spend being spoken to was that it was just to teach me to fill in ONE SINGLE FORM!!! The form was the risk assessment form we have to fill out every time we go out to do anything a little bit different.

And what annoyed me even more was the trainer had the gall to say that we could probably already fill out the form without learning how to because it was intuitive – why the hell are you making me sit here for an hour if it’s THAT intuitive?

In fact it IS easy to fill out and in fact I’ve filled several of the pointless arse covering documents out and in fact I’ve done the same pointless course before as well – but we have to be ‘topped up’.

This is where I apologise though – I may well have descended back to my school boy clown days and acted the idiot a little bit – it was the environment that forced it out of me.

I VERY NEARLY put on the hi-vis jacket we have sitting in our office for when we take photos at night (It’s never been worn) but decided against it – well I didn’t decide against it my boss suggested it might not be the best idea J

So there you have it – that’s how the licence fee is spent – training people to fill out forms that are easy enough to work out without any instruction or training.

The risk of writing this post? Medium/High!
