“pointless male mind”
June 6, 2008 by upyourego
A quote from Top Gear Executive Producer before I get to the point of the post “Top Gear is not just about cars, it’s also about celebrating that massive Black Hole of Pointlessness that is the male mind.”
Now on to the point of the post - actually what’s written above IS the point of the post. For the last few years, mainly since it started to rapidly increase in popularity, there has been a rift between two camps of Top Gear fans and much debate over just what the show is about.
The quote above from Andy Willman pretty much sums this up - it’s not just about cars although they feature, it’s not just about driving and technology although it plays a part - what it IS about is three middle aged blokes having a laugh together.

Or as Andy describes it “the pointlessness of the male mind”. I except the few people that actually read this blog are male, or at least most of them and so, talking mano e mano - we’ve all done some pretty pointless stuff right?
I’m not just talking about teenage pointless stuff either and by god did I do plenty of that - no I’m talking about the pointless stuff we all do as adults and if Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond are anything to go by - will continue to do for years to come.
That pointless something could be spending four hours putting a shelf up in a shed that you intend to make your own private space, more time still adding a desk and electricity and then later decide never to use the space at all.
It could be, and this IS one of mine, the pointlessness of spending three days trying to build a new computer from spare parts, installing Linux and then giving up completely because you can’t get the WiFi card to work.
But it stretches beyond the stuff you do on your own - it also includes that house of cards, room full of dominoes, snooker trickshots and computer games you spend dozens of hours doing with mates.
That is Top Gear - it’s a group of blokes that love pissing about doing bloke things, embarking on bloke projects and having fun together.
Top Gear and the team help us blokes without the benefit of a large TV crew, team of researchers, production team and the BBC behind us to live through and enjoy some seriously cool adventures.
This coming series, due to start on 22 June on BBC TWO, has some amazing sounding adventures, stunts and activities including an attempt to build a Police Car, something in Japan, more races and a LOT more besides.
Another quote from Andy Willman to finish “Making mischief frees the imagination, it quickens the pulse. It should be taught in schools. Watch that film Big Fish and you’ll see what I mean.”
