What to do with the music?

April 15, 2008

As part of my day job I get sent dozens of CDs every week. These take the form of full albums, album samplers, white label promos and singles - even big package singles with sleeve notes.

Most of the time these CDs just end up on a shelf never to be listened to again. Sometimes I will rip the CD and put the tracks on my iPod but not often.

The problem is that I don’t really have much music on my iPod. I have an 8GB Nano  and about 80% of it is filled with podcasts, audio books, radio series and TV programmes - the final 20% is music.

But that really only allows room for a small handful of albums from my favourite bands. It doesn’t let me put new stuff on there I’ve never heard before.

Once upon a time my iPod would be filled with demos I’d been sent by bands from around the world. Tracks I would then later right about or play on air (on the rare occasion I present a show).

But, even though the music isn’t a priority for me anymore - I still get sent dozens of CDs. So the question I’m asking myself is - what should I do with them?

I can’t give them away as they’re ‘not for resale, owned by the label’ promos but I would like to see them do more than just gather dust.

So how would you feel about me writing the occasional album review - these are sent often weeks in advance of their release so might make for a good preview.

It sort of fits within the brief I’ve set myself with this blog but it does still fall slightly outside it. I was thinking of using the current ’sign up’ space on the blog homepage to house the reviews.

I’m always interested to hear about new music, and I don’t think a couple of album reviews here and there will hurt. Maybe keep it to the same day each week and put 2 or 3 in one post (I’m not sure how many you’re planning to do!).

I don’t know how “big” the albums are that you get to review, but if you get something that is causing a buzz it could certainly be good for your traffic.

Thanks - I’ll give it ago and see how it works out. The last couple of ‘big’ albums I’ve been sent were from bands like The Kooks, Rolling Stones and Morrissey.

Definitely would be worth posting reviews then, in my opinion. Only last week I was looking at the new Stones album, and this week “Konk” is released, so it would be interesting and handy to have an extra opinion to hand.
