Top Gear in America

April 14, 2008

With the announcement of Series 11 of Top Gear probably only around the corner (the BBC Press Office site has started displaying schedules for the start of May already) I thought I’d post a TG clip for today’s video.

Also, as the American version of Top Gear (AKA Gear) is also getting into um… gear I thought the American Special was a good clip to show.

There’s also an interesting discussion starting on the Final Gear forums about High Definition and when we’re likely to start seeing Top Gear filmed that way.

Here is my response to the question about when we’re likely to start seeing it.

The BBC is VERY QUICKLY moving towards HD across the board. I think it’s the case that any NEW commission (not new series of an older show) has to be filmed in HD. Even local news stations use low end HD capable cameras for stories.

Older shows are also now starting to move towards HD and I agree with AJ88 - I think Series 12 will probably be HD - Series 13 at the latest.

As for in car cameras - HD is getting smaller and cheaper all the time and there are a lot of small HD cameras already in the BBC.

A lot of the web teams around the country use the Sony A1 for producing web content and that’s capable of 1080i.

Jayme - unfortunately not. Although it looks like it will be sometime in June - that’s about as close as I can confirm at the moment.

The start date should be released within the next couple of weeks though.
