Growing your own

I’ve decided to join the ranks of green fingered peoples and have a go at growing my own food. In this case Jersey Royal New Potatoes.

Now when I say I’m having a go, what I really mean is my mother in law is having a go in my yard. I brought the sprouting potatoes with the intention of planting them.

Three weeks later my mother in law got fed up, brought a couple of planters, some soil and planted the Royals herself – she knew I’d never bother.

So at some point in the next couple of weeks I will have some fresh grown Jersey Royals (completely natural and organic) straight out of my own planters and in turn straight to my own plate.

Oh and a tip for Jersey Royals – keep them simple.

Method

Wash the Royals gently then steam them with the skin still ON – when soft enough to put your fork into it put into a bowl with some butter, ground black pepper and fresh oregano.

Oh and a tip for growing them – regularly top up and re-pack the soil around the royals and cover them with plastic bags or similar.
