Embedding madness

April 10, 2008

I love the fact that I can now go to a BBC News story and watch the video file right there on the page without having to wait for a pointless painful pop-up.

In fact I’ve been sucked into watching hours of video across the BBC site (not including iPlayer) over the past couple of weeks because of the ability to just click play.

I’ve been told by a BBC News Online Editor that embedded videos are watching around ten times more than traditional video files - which makes a lot of sense really.

But the point of this post is the fact that the BBC have started embedding audio as well - this isn’t that new as audio was being embedded (flash) for Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds last year but this is the first time its appeared on news.

It’s also a hint at the way Audio Embedd may work when it appears on the BBC iPlayer - the current Realmedia/Windows Media pop-up is being incorporated into the non-pop-up iPlayer interface.

But this particular feature (about snakes with legs) went a bit heavy on the add-ins - there is a video file at the top, an audio file in the middle, three graphics and an embedded gallery.

I understood what it was on about but I didn’t really read any of the text.

There’s likely to be a LOT more video appearing on BBC News Online VERY soon as there have been a number of job adverts for On Demand Journalists who’s job will be to get video content online and create/produce more stuff - including possibly some presentation.
