New BBC News Soon

March 30, 2008 by upyourego

I’ve blogged a few times now about various news websites and their designs and I’ve mentioned more than once that I think BBC News is in need of a new look.

Well it looks like this is on the verge of happening. According to Steve Herrmann, Editor of BBC News Online, the site is going to get a whole new look with the goal of launching “launch next week.”

The new look will see the site move to the same wide format in use on the BBC Homepage, the removal of the ugly gray bar which will be replaced with the big black bar currently on bbc.co.uk and a move to have embedded video for ALL video stories - not sure if audio will follow but I expect it will.

Source: WikipediaThere isn’t a huge amount of detail about this yet but I know it will also apply to the BBC Sport site and will allow for better integration with new social media services.

BBC News is currently the most narrow of all major news sites and I know width isn’t everything but with so much related information out there now - it does help to have more screen real estate available.

I’ve also heard rumour of better comment integration with more stories as well - so we’ll wait to see what happens. I do know that the Content Production System used to create BBC News Online stories has had a major overhaul and it looks pretty good and is even easier to use than before.

Anyway - I’ll write a full review when the new look site actually launches. Lets hope they either 1) remove the ugly blue audio video buttons or 2) change the whole colour scheme so they actually fit in.
