Embedded video on BBC News
March 13, 2008
It’s been a long time coming but it looks like BBC News Online has finally launched embedded videos. By embedded videos I’m actually talking about inline flash movies as part of a page.
Until now all videos on the BBC News website where in a pop-up console and either Real Media or Windows Media and often very clunky.
The plan has been for BBC News to show video files in flash format for a while and it looks like they’ve finally gone for a soft launch - really only on Tech features so far.
It works really well and the video is placed at the top of the page where an image would be normally - it’s hard to tell how it would work on a ‘normal’ story as, so far it’s only on by lined features.
It looks good and the player is the same as the one used by other BBC websites such as Torchwood and the White season.
However, what is clearly missing from this soft launch is an embed link - the code I can copy and paste on to my own blog so I can share the clips with you here.
I hope that feature is launched when it is fully rolled out across the news site - maybe it will have to wait until BBC News Online gets its wide redesign in the next few months - who knows.
I tried to copy and paste the embed code from the page source (after all that’s all the embed code on You Tube or Torchwood does) but, although it DOES play, it throws my sites design out.

[...] gray bar which will be replaced with the big black bar currently on bbc.co.uk and a move to have embedded video for ALL video stories - not sure if audio will follow but I expect it [...]
Got something to say?
