The evolution of a homepage
February 21, 2008 by upyourego
One of the main advantages of a company going public beta with a product, or at least public beta with the new version of a site/homepage - is the simple fact that we get to see its evolution.
Last year I published screen grabs of the new look BBC Homepage right here - it’s still looking pretty much the same but with a few minor tweeks that make it feel more … well more stable.
You can also now customize the colour of your homepage so it will ALWAYS look that way regardless of the promo tab you click on.
The original release of the Homepage Beta felt very floaty - the various objects were basically ‘there’ they sat around, floated and hopes for the best.

The new homepage still has a selection of floaty things that look the same - but the addition of a few lines makes it all seem much more integrated.
The big problem I’ve come across though - is simply that I can’t make it accept I’m within Britain - that I should be seeing the UK version and not the international one.
What that means is I don’t get the iPlayer object, I can’t use the TV or radio objects (as they don’t show UK radio and TV) and things just feel wrong.
I’m a big fan of the new BBC Homepage but it still hasn’t become my homepage yet - when it lets me add objects of my own creation ala Google Homepage (just a simple RSS feed or a set of links) that will cause me to make it my Homepage.
