Spooks on iTunes
February 19, 2008
I’ve just downloaded an episode of Spooks on iTunes and I’m pretty impressed with the quality. It’s 640 wide video, comes in at about 600mb for the one hour show and can be played even before the download has finished.
According to The Register it is DRM free and H.264.
The video is encoded in standard definition H.264 (AKA MPEG-4 Part 10) without DRM, in common with other content on iTunes UK and compatible with PC, Macs, iPod and iPhone, as well as other mobile devices.
When the download has finished I’ll play with this and try putting it on a couple of different devices to see what happens. Until then - I’ll just watch and enjoy.
Although - I only have an iPod nano so this really is more of a computer based excersize - I’m not filling up 600mb of my 8gb drive with one video file. I’ve just encoded a load of Mark Thomas product shows at 512kbs and 320 wide - they come in at a MUCH more reasonable 150mb.
With such a small screen quality isn’t so much of an issue - maybe iTunes should have a ‘downsize’ option before putting a video on your iPod - that way you get the ‘quality’ version and the option of reducing that quality for other players.
