All new Three

BBC Three

The look BBC Three website has finally launched - unlike other BBC television websites that are more about giving information about shows than showing the show itself.

BBC Three is an extension of what’s on TV - it shows what goes out on television at the same time, before and on demand - the two work together.

The new BBC Three website is, and please excuse the jargon ‘a multiplatform solution’. What that basically means is that if a show appears on TV it will also be on the website with related mobile content and the ability for people to communicate, create and share.

It’s all flash based (bbc.co.uk/three) and is pretty much centred around video - the player is pretty much the same as the one used on the BBC iPlayer site and has a mix of live and on demand content.

When you first come to the site you have a consol with three columns - catch up, see it first and you made it.

The first is basically links to iPlayer videos - either on the BBC THREE site, on the BBC programme catalog or on the iPlayer site itself.

The second is a mix of short preview clips and full length shows that are being shown BEFORE the TV airing. I imagine the number of pre-TV shows will increase as new commissions come on board - at moment it seems to be just 2 Pints.

The third is all about UGC - it’s basically the clips people have sent in to introduce BBC THREE shows (man in fridge looking for 2 pints and crisps) and clips people made to fill the gaps between shows while everyone else takes a piss or makes the tea.

Over all it’s an impressive design that’s really usable and targeted for the BBC Three audience. It’s also nice to be able to watch stuff with flash instead of pissing about with Real.

Incidentally - now large parts of the BBC Three site is revolved around live streaming (video shown at the same time on the web as its broadcast on BBC TV) you WILL need a TV license to use it.
