New Guardian
February 11, 2008
I’ve long been a fan of the Guardian website as it’s always been refreshingly open - the Guardian was one of the first newspapers to get their stuff online and then one of the first to get it online before it went to print.
However, until their re-design a few months ago it was looking a little bit tired - you could still see just how tired it looked up until yesterday in fact - as half the site was still in the old template.
But that all seems to be changing as Guardian Unlimited has become Guardian.co.uk.
The last set of changes to the site were heavy duty and high impact - it moved Guardian from a 800x wide site to a 1024x wide site, changed the layout of indexes dramatically and added a whole host of other things.
This change is seems to be more about navigation, usability and content structure.
It makes things like Share This, Printable and clips easier to use (and more prominent), it features a very effective navigation system (that doubles as a crumb trail) and a range of other chagnes.
It’s also seen MUCH more of the site brought into the new structure/look.
It’s now put the Guardian back at the top of the British newspaper websites - in fact it’s put Guardian back at the top of the British NEWS websites.
The content is great and it looks good too.
I’d like to say BBC News is the best of the British news sites - but as I’ve mentioned before the now ageing design is struggling to cope with an influx of new, new media technologies - it’s a case of cramming it all in to make it work.
It needs a major overhaul, a completely new look to cope with the soon to launch embedded video, the shoved at the bottom social links, an increasing number of sites it could link out to, blogs, comments (adverts on the international site) and MUCH MORE. Fortunately it won’t be long before it does get a new look.
