Going live with Yahoo!

February 9, 2008

The web, as with most things in life is all about trends and the latest seems to be to have everything you do shown live over webTV ALL the time. It’s the Truman Show effect but done on the cheap and in real life.

In fact if we’re working on film references It’s more like Ed TV but who’s checking - neither were that good.

There are services springing up all over the place that let you film yourself and put it online - some are restricted to the web and are little more than glorified chat rooms - others use mobile technology to get the message to a wider audience.

The latest of the first type to launch is Yahoo! Live - it’s a clone of sites like Kyte and Seesmic and with the right equipment lets anyone do what’s happening at Justin TV or even iJustine.

The more interesting prospect is Qik though - as used by Robert Scoble to live video blog the Davos Conference. Qik basically lets you put live video on the web from your mobile phone.

The big question I’ve got though is - why - why on earth would you want to stream you’re every moment? I can understand why people watch iJustine and I can understand why people watch Scoble - he’s a cult in his own right - but the VAST MAJORITY of people that will use these services - really?

I’ll stick to blogging and flickr I think.

Oh and link love to Robin Hamman.
