It all falls back to Wordpress
October 1, 2007 by upyourego
Over the last few years I’ve played with a number of different blogging platforms - either for Up Your Ego or another short lived new media concept - but it always falls back to Wordpress.
I’ve played with Blogger - in fact I started with Blogger long before Google took over - I used it exensively and built themes from scratch for it but it was limited.
I’ve toyed with Movable Type, I’ve played with Drupal, installed and set up Joomla and at one time or another done much the same with the vast majority of platforms - I even built my own once (although it wasn’t very good).
But after all of that I still came back to Wordpress, I still use Wordpress extensively and will still tell anyone that asks to use Wordpress as their first port of call.
Why? For many reasons - it’s brilliantly simple to use and set up, it’s incredibly expendable without more than a hint of coding knowledge (even less with widgets) and can go the other way and be so complex you can make it perform almost ANY trick.
It’s this flexibility and range of abilities that makes Wordpress the best blogging and CMS platform out there.
Even Leo Laporte - he of trying everything new that comes out - has gone back to the ‘Press.

Wordpress is a very good platform (XSet runs on it) although recent version seem to be gaining a little weight due to the need to be “easy to customise”. This is the reason I dumped Expression Engine.
I’d love to see a Wordpress Pro edition with plugin support but stipped down to the lean mean blogging core for those of use who hack the PHP in the template before we look for a plugin or widget.
I’m keeping an eye on Habari as a possible next platform - PHP5, PDO, fast, thin and very cool. Development is a little slow but it’s getting there.
Oh and Blogger were taken over by Google not Microsoft but you knew that right?
Thats the arse of writing a blog post late a night - yeah I know it’s google.
Oh and I agree about the more recent versions getting a bit chuncky and I personally don’t like widgets - I prefer the control - but its still the best platform.
