Bugroff

September 8, 2007

As you might have guessed from reading this blog on a regular basis - I have a slight addiction to joining social networks - any opportunity to sign up and I’m in there like a shot.

Of course most of the time I never actually go back again beyond that initial sign up process - but at least my heart was in the right place initially :)

So as you might guess I got myself all excited when I recieved a new e-mail inviting me to a social network - I didn’t read it properly at first - I just thought - cool somebody has sent me an invite to a new, closed beta, cool site.

Alas twas not to be.

Nope fortunately I don’t need to find more time to add tweets to twitter, comments to pownce, wall posts on facebook or even Jaiku posts.

The network I was invited to is an anti-network in the form of Bugroff!

Here is the e-mail sent to me by Gary Dring:

You’ve been invited to bugroff! ‘Bugroff’ at bugroff.net <http://www.bugroff.net/> is a clever little antisocial networking site for people who would really prefer to be on their own.

You can’t sign up because you’re not invited. But if you were, here’s what you could do:– Post no pictures of yourself or friends

- Invite no one else to join

- Switch status between ‘unavailable, ‘hiding’ and ‘dead’

- Keep what you’re doing now private

- Receive no communications of any sort

- Generally hide away

Check it out (or rather don’t) at bugroff.net <http://www.bugroff.net/>

Of course this isn’t real - Bugroff.net takes you to a very funny graphic explaining what the ultimate anti-social network is all about - and I have to say it’s pretty refreshing.

Everybody I know is on facebook or My Space - well almost everybody - there is one notable exception who is a social network refuseniks - but I’ve invited him to Bugroff - I think he’ll join this one :)

With everybody I know being able to see everything I’m doing it gets to be a bit of a drain sometimes - it makes keeping my work life and my non-work life separate pretty tough.

I mean - as an example - there are 20 thousand (or so) people working for the BBC and at the moment nearly half of those are on the BBC Facebook Network - this has gone down recently - at one point it reached around 15 thousand.

I know this is a comedy site - bugroff not facebook - set up by the incredibly funny Clever Little Pod but it does raise a serious point - Isn’t it about time we all became a little less social?
