Top Gear Road Trip

February 12, 2007

There shouldbe a road trip episode in EVERY series of Top Gear from now on - or at the very least a new series called Top Gear Road Trip (or Top Trip) where the lads go on a trip similar to the one in the most recent episode.

Top Gear on Sunday 11 February 2007 was one of the best hours of television ever. Fantastic, heart warming, just wonderful.

The three of them (Clarkson, Hammond and May) really do seem to be very good friends. It was so funny my stomach was hurting at some points, at others I just had a brilliant, warm feeling inside.

I’ve watched the episode three times now and it keeps getting better. The friendship between the three of them really is enough to bring tears to your eyes. This is perfect television, funny, dramatic, funny, charming, warm, funny and just touching.

The slogans were perfect, the cars fit brilliantly and really felt like they were part of the team - a brilliantly unscripted piece of cocking about with cars - something Top Gear does better than anything else in the world.

The ending was perfect, I couldn’t think of a better way to end the episode.

I’ve also just checked the ratings for Top Gear 09×03 (The American Special) and it’s not as good as last week but still better than last series.

Another interesting fact is that, unlike the last two weeks figures climbed from start to finish. Last week it was high at the start, dropped in the middle and climbed back up again. This week it started lower and climbed throughout (good sign for the repeat on Wednesday).

The episode had an average of 6 million viewers. It started at 5.3 million going up to 5.9, 6.3 and then finishing at 6.6 million viewers. It had an audience share of 22% again raising from 20 to 23.4% over the course of the hour show.

It was beaten in its timeslot by ITV1’s Wild at Heart (7.1 million) but beat everything else in the same timeslot. It came fifth all evening. Ahead of it were the obvious Coronation Street (10.1 million), Emmerdale (7.6 million), Foyle’s War (7.6 million), Wild at Heart (7.1 million).

ITV reigned supreme last night. Channel 4 may have been the cause of slightly lower ratings as it had the first terrestrial run of The Day After Tomorow (4 million).

I can see a new series coming called Top Gear Road Trip - the three of them going on various famous road trips around the world in cars related to that country and doing challenges along the way.

Oh and Primeval? Wasn’t bad - bit of fun braindead Saturday night television.

Brilliant blog! I can’t wait for the next installment. That episode was hilarious. It had me in fits of laughter. I liked the way Hammond and Jezza thought that James’s caddy needed a bit of roughing up from time to time!
