Media overload
January 22, 2007 by upyourego
Posts over the last few days have been few and far between for various reasons. These are all connected in one way or another. All have an overload of media and information at their core.
The first is a complete lack of sleep, I’ve got so much and so many things to do that I’m going to bed at stupid o clock in the morning and then being woken up about two hours later by my LOUD children.
The second is the fact that my brain is full, I can’t fit any more information in, so writing a blog post that is at least slightly researched is out of the question - I have to write for work so need any space I have left for the research for stories I’m writing there.
The third is time. I’ve got four books on the go, more DVDs than I can count, TV shows starting that I really want to watch, audiobooks to listen to and podcasts to catch up on. Not to mention blogs, news stories, forums and websites I like to read - I’ve taken to printing stories I want to read and putting them in a folder to read when I have time!
All are connected to the simple fact that there is too much information, too much entertainment and too much media for my tiny little mind to cope with effectivly.
I need to drop something if I’m going to keep blogging effectively. One thing I could drop is the TV - I can catch up on shows later by downloading them - but the ‘appointment to watch’ marketing buzz has worked on me and there are certain shows I want to see as they happen.
One of these starts on Sunday - anyone that has been reading this blog for more than five minutes will know I’m a big Top Gear fan and what looks set to be a BRILLIANT new series kicks off on Sunday 28 January (next week) at 8pm.
Another thing I could cut back on is the podcasts and on demand TV. I’ve got whole series of programmes on DVD and on my computer (thanks to torrent and 4OD - I’ll pay for it if it’s available to pay for) that I haven’t seen yet. I could leave them there and watch them when I DO have five minutes.
I could cut back on reading other blogs, news sites and forums but then I wouldn’t have a useful source of information for possible blog posts - that’s sort of like cutting your mouse to spite your hard drive (or something along those lines).
It’s possible I could give up on books - but thats a nice, healthy past time that lets me escape from the constant go of the media world. There is nothing better than sitting on a lunchbreak watching the waves crash against the sea wall while reading a good book.
The problem is, whatever I drop, I still don’t think I’ll get much blogging done. There is such a massive overload of really good things to blog about I can’t decide which ones I should opt for.
Any ideas I can implement that will let me carry on doing everything, get more sleep AND be able to continue blogging properly - without giving up my job!

I know the feeling. Too many things to do and not enough time is the classic problem that still remains despite moving forward with technology, it just means that the range of things is bigger. When things feel like this for me I try to remember the key lessons from The Seven Habits about putting what’s important first. Hard as it is, some stuff just isn’t important enough and has to go/wait/be passed over.
