You’ve been Plutoed
January 8, 2007 by upyourego
Please excuse this slightly soft, not really on topic post but I’m easing myself back in after nearly two weeks without regular access to a computer.
I was a bit upset when Pluto was demoted last year, I like Pluto it’s a fun little ice ball. I prefer nine to eight, I learnt the planets using rhymes including Pluto - alas it is now a planetoid (I prefer that to the ‘official’ dwarf planet) and I must learn to live with it.
However, something good has come out of it. A new word that, unlike many other similar words is actually great fun. I haven’t heard it used before but apparently it’s the American Dialect Society word of the year.
Plutoed - to be demoted or devalued.
The Urban Dictionary has this definition of Plutoed “to be demoted without due cause or reason. I was captain of the ship for one day, but then I was plutoed.”
Apparently it was up against “climate canary”, or something whose poor health indicates a looming environmental catastrophe. Other words included flog an advertisement disguised as a blog or web log (bit of a pet peve of mine) and Prohibited liquids “fluids that cannot be transported by passengers on airplanes”.
While on the Urban Dictionary site I found a new phrase I intent to use more often. It describes an action I do a lot.
Girlfriend Button
The button on the controller of an xbox or PS2 you have to press to pause the game when your girlfriend wants to talk. She said “We need to talk…” So I pressed the girlfriend button to pause my Madden game.
I don’t play games that much but I’m always having to pause a DVD or my iPod when my wife walks in - I’ll call it the ‘Wife Button’ as I’m married.
