Blog Stories
December 6, 2006 by upyourego
This post follows what seems to be a golden tip of blogging “in the absense of anything worthwhile to blog about, blog about blogging” or “nothing to say? say something about nothing”.
Don’t get me wrong, I do have a lot of ideas for posts but most require a huge amount of research, research I don’t have time to do or would be short stab posts.
The short stab posts are where I’ve dug myself a giant hole with this new theme. Don’t get me wrong, I love it and think it looks great but the layout means my posts have to be at least 500 words or things start to look a little bit silly.
The only way I can tweek it to let me post smaller entries would be to remove most of the items from the right hand menu (it was designed to just be meta info on the post) but I like having the MyBlogLog widget and Top Gear promo there.
So I have to wait until I’ve got enough time to write a full post with several hundred words - something that isn’t always appropriate for a blog - in fact I find blog posts of 200 - 300 words are an idea legnth.
So sometimes you might have noticed blog posts that haven’t been at the top of the front page or ever been the first item in the RSS feed - these are the ones I can’t make long enough so just alter the timestamp to force them further down the running order.
I think I’m going to have to spend the time tweaking the design as there is a REAL need for me to write quick stab posts on subjects when I don’t have the time to do something more in depth but want to share my thoughts anyway.
Maybe what I’ll do is change it so that the first two stories are in full on the homepage or no stories in full - just a list of headlines and summaries more like The Register.
Either way I’ll have to do something - what do you think I should do? Should I just live with the frontpage looking a bit silly or change the design to let me write shorter posts?
How long do you think a blog posts should be? Why am I asking you so many questions when you probably gave up after 200 words?
Oh and the image! The reason I’ve included that one is that it’s one of the few in my Flickr stream with no views at all and I’ve found everytime I use an image from my flickr stream on a blog post it gets at least 20/30 views.
It’s an interesting way of seeing how many people have actually read, or at least looked at briefly the post.
