I give up

August 15, 2006 by upyourego

I got my new 250gb Hard Drive last week but didn’t get a chance to install it until yesterday - finally did and decided, now that I’ve got the space, to give Linux a go.

Everyone seems to be going on about how easy it is to set up, how user friendly it is and how in most cases it’s easier than windows - and to a certain extent I agree.

I decided to go with Ubuntu just because it’s the most talked about distro at the moment. I went on to their website and found the torrent link for a download - 30 minutes later I had the iso downloaded and burnt to a disk.

So I restarted my computer, it found the disk, booted, logged into Ubuntu from the CD, but my CD drive is crap and it run like a dog, so I installed it.

Easily partitioned the hard drive - although you DO have to know what you’re doing if you’re going to set this up as a share on a hard drive with windows already running.

Got through that, installed it, it set up a bootmanager and I logged in.

Almost everything works well - the OS is very attractive and user friendly (half mac half windows), office apps etc were there by default and it had some neat little features I’d like in windows.

BUT and this is a big but - I have a Wireless network so found the network settings bit very easily - clicked the settings button, activated WiFi and put in my WEP key - it didn’t work.

The problem is that my WiFi card doesn’t have Linux support (Belkin 54g Wireless PCI Card) - I logged into Windows and searched the web and found a solution.

Unfortunatly the solution was shockingly confusing, it required logging in as root and using the command line - I played around for a while, got fed up and am now looking for a windows based partition manager so I can uninstall Linux and give me the Hard Drive space back for Windows.

When I last installed Windows (as soon as I put Service Pack 2 on) it picked up my Wireless card, asked for the disk and installed it - then I was up, running and browsing the net.

Oh well - getting a Mac in January anyway (yes I’ve decided to go for a MacBook).
