Google makes live product beta

August 15, 2006 by upyourego

A couple of years ago I started blogging, I launched the blog at blogger.com and it used a standard blogger template. For a first time blogger that site (now owned by Google) is brilliant.

It’s relatively easy to use - to the point where it’s the tool I recommend to novice computer users that want to blog (often band members) and looks very pretty.

Now Google are getting ready to launch the first big update to the service since the one after buying it and are taking it to the same place as almost every other Google application - the land of the beta.

When I logged into blogger.com (not the beta version) to see if there was mention of the beta and to compare and see if it also has the - login with a Google account - option I got an error message:

Blogger ProblemThis server is currently experiencing a problem. An engineer has been notified and will investigate.

Please visit the Blogger status page or the Blogger Knowledge Base for further assistance.

If you login to beta.blogger.com though you can see the option to login with your Google account - if you don’t have a Blogger account but do have say Gmail it will automatically set up a Blogger account for you.

There are also apparently other updates including the way it sends pages to Blogspot - something about only sending the changed page and not the whole site - plus security & interface changes, including a drag and drop interface.

Most interesting though is native tagging - it comes with the ability to tag posts built in by default (no more dodgy workaround), something even Wordpress doesn’t have out of the box.

Although if you do run wordpress and want to have tags (like I use) I suggest Ultimate Tag Warrior by Christine Davis.

That’s about it really.
