Maybe OSX now

My last post was a random rambling about whether I should get a MacBook or a Dell. Since posting it I’ve been looking at various options and to be honest it really doesn’t come down to hardware at all - there isn’t THAT much difference between a Mac Book and a PC Laptop for the price I could pay.

The decision really is one of OS - Windows Vista, OSX or Ubuntu - all three come with very good reasons to go for them - all three have negative reasons to go for them.

The main reason for going Vista is that I’ve been using Windows for years and all the software I own is the windows version so a switch to OSX would mean buying new software (yes buying!).

There are also other problems with OSX in that a number of new apps being developed (including the BBC iPlayer) are unlikely to work with OSX as it will be based on the Windows Media Player DRM.

However I grew up with Macs (my Mum worked for Apple) and use them at work, I prefer the operating system, it feels more natural and there are a number of features (not available in Windows) that just make me drool - that and they ARE more secure (at the moment).

The one thing that’s really swinging it for me at the moment is the new Time Machine feature in Leopard that lets you recover old content that you thought you’d deleted.

The number of times I’ve taken a phone call - written someones address/phone number down in notepad, saved it to the desktop and then deleted it without thinking - only to need it a couple of weeks later is … well silly really.

I put Ubuntu at the top because I like the look of it and the principle of going all open source IS a good one - but I don’t think I ever will on my production machine.

The ideal solution for me would be for Adobe to have a Switch Licence where I could swap my Windows versions for Mac versions (even for a small cost) but in the absense of a caring society I may get the MacBook with enough RAM to let me run bootcamp and Windows Vista.

Then when I have the money eventually get new versions of sofware and phase out the Windows install.
