Opera on the DS
August 3, 2006 by upyourego
The second in this series of stories I missed while on holiday - Opera have announced that they will be releasing a version of their browser for the Nintendo DS.
When I heard the news on Diggnation this morning I started jumping up and down very excited - ok so not jumping up and down, more little smile in the corner of my mouth.
Up until about a week ago I’ve been avoiding the pull of portable gaming opting to live with the text games on my iPod or snake on my phone if I need a game fix (which isn’t that often).
However I had money and it was burning a hole in my pocket while on holiday so I decided to bite the bullet and buy a Nintendo DS Lite - mainly for the Brain Training thingy.
Well £110 and a week later and I’m already getting bored - I don’t have enough time to play it properly (to much on TV at the moment - loving Eureka and looking forward to Time Trumpet and Supernova - thank god for the DVD recorder).
Anyway thats four news posts I’ve thought of in the process of writing the last paragraph but for now back to the point of this particular word of timewastedness.
So, I’m very excited about the fact that Opera will be available on my DS (from October in Europe) - the one thing I do like about the DS is how it goes from off to operational in about 10 seconds - that and the touch screen, handwriting etc…
Which means it will be a great way to quickly check the net while in a WiFi zone (including my house). But this got me thinking about other things I’d like to see on my DS that I’d use a lot more than games.
The first thing that sprung to mind was a decent office app set - lets say e-mail programme, calendar and notebook - in fact this could be something the Mozilla group could release in partnership with Nintendo and maybe the Open Office people.
The other idea that hit my head was WiFi radio and TV - I’d love to buy a card that had all the relevant media players and software to let me listen to radio stations while in WiFi zones or watch the ever increasing number of TV channels broadcasting over the internet.
The final thing was Skype.
What would you like to see made available for the DS? Or maybe I should just buy a PDA.
