Ban Filesharers

July 10, 2006

Just caught a report on BBC News 24 where there was a spokesman for the BPI saying that they would be pressing major UK ISPs to enforce their Terms and Conditions in banning known filesharers.

He said they have already been taking legal action against major uploaders but this would help them get the heavy downloaders as well.

According to the BBC News story the BFI have said that the ISPs should now “put their houses in order and pull the plug on these people”.

Again according to BBC News the BFI say this will enable them “to deal with a greater volume of cases more quickly and efficiently”.

This is interesting - instead of attacking filesharers in the court they’re going after the ISP and asking them to stop the filesharers using their network completely, wonder if it will actually work?

Interestingly, the original BBC News 24 report included shots of the iTunes music store while the reporter was talking about illegal filesharing, not saying that there are alternatives but that more and more people are sharing music illegally.

Apparently the BPI has identified 17 Tiscali IP addresses and 42 Cable & Wireless IP addresses which were used to upload “significant quantities of music owned by BPI members”.

The report goes on to say how although the BPI can identify the service providers, only the ISPs can identify their customers.

The Chairman of the BPI, Peter Jaimeson told BBC News that it was unnacceptable for ISPs to turn a “blind eye to industrial-scale copyright infringement”.

He told the Beeb that they “are providing unequivocal evidence of copyright infringement via their services”.

“It is now up to them to put their house in order and pull the plug on these people.”

On another BBC & Music note

Also on a music note Universal Music have confirmed that rare BBC session tracks are to be released as digital downloads in partnership with BBC Worldwide.

The deal is part of a plan by Universal to release around 100,000 currently unavailable tracks online.

It will include tracks from artists like Pulp and Billy Fury.
