Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam

According to Askimet, the comment spam attack dog over 93% of all comments are spam, or at least they are for established blogs, it takes a while to get noticed but when you are then bang!

Before the system crash (and losing nearly two years worth of blog posts) I was getting about 40+ spam messages a day.

If I left it more than a couple of days I’d have to remove messages one by one because the script would time-out before it could load the whole page.

Since version 2.0 of Wordpress and Askimet as a default plugin (I was running 2.0 before the crash), that problem died almost completely, a couple of spam comments would get on to the moderation page a week but Askimet dealt with the rest effortlessly.

Now that the new version of Up Your Ego is building a user base and again and people are starting to link, the Askimet plugin is once again earning its keep (not that I costs anything for humble, personal bloggers like me that is).

In the last three days it has grabbed 25 spam messages and delt with them so I don’t have to worry about their pointless rambling content - instead I can concentrate on creating brand new, pointless rambling content for the main blog.

Check out the new Askimet stats page (the whole point of this post to be honest) where they have live info on how many spam messages Askimet has blocked compared to the amount of Ham (actual comments) it’s let through - on a very pretty graph.

Current figures show that there has been a total of 72 and a half million spam comments compared to just 5 and a half million actual comments.
