An omen for England!
June 5, 2006
Let me appologise first - this blog will not become a football zone, there will not be football posts everyday of the world cup, this is interesting and relevant to tommorows date (06/06/06).
According to bookies there are some scary parallels between England in 2006 and England in 1966 World Cup.
In 1966 England were second favourites at 6-1 to win with Brazil ahead of them and Italy and Argentina below them. There were doubts over whether carismatic striker Jimmy Greaves would play and people doubted Alf Ramseys ability to go all the way.
In 2006 England are second favourites at 6-1 to win with Brzil ahead of them and Italy and Argentina below them. There are doubts over whether carismatic striker Wayne Rooney will play and people doubt Svens ability to go all the way.
Apparently one punter has bet £1000 at 500-1 that England will beat Germany in the final 4-2.
According to bookmakers William Hill Englands odds to win were dropped to 6-1 after a ‘flurry of patriotic support’ following the news that Wayne Rooney might actually play and Peter Crouch’s hat trick during the 6-0 thrashing of Jamaica.
William Hill have said that [unters will gamble over £1million per hour for the duration of the World Cup, producing a record breaking betting turnover of £1 billion on the tournament.
Latest William Hill World Cup odds…9/4 Brazil ; 6/1 England; 8/1 Argentina; Germany; Italy; 12/1 Holland, Spain; 14/1 France; 20/1 Portugal.
William Hill make Wayne Rooney 8/13 to play in the World Cup, 6/5 to miss out.
I don’t like football but I do like the World Cup - mainly because I love the way a whole nation rally around their team, the pride in the country and it happens the world over.
