(is this the way to) The World Cup
May 15, 2006
Forget Amarillo, this time around the mighty Tony Christie is on the way to Berlin and he isn’t taking Peter Kaye with him.
On 29 May 2006 Tony Christie will be throwing his hat into the already heavy duty and over crowded World Cup song ring with a re-versioning of (is this the way to) Amarillo imaginatively titled (is this the way to) The World Cup.
It features the customary comentary at the start of the track, the video at a football pitch and the comedy lyrics set to a classic tune - this one is by Tony Christie and is released on GUT records.
You can watch the video by going to (Is This the Way), it’s in Windows Media format and is hosted by Sky for some reason - apparently the world premier of the video is today.
Here are the lyrics to (is this the way to) The World Cup sung by Tony Christie in support of the 2006 England World Cup team in Germany.
I love the “They will all be heros on … plasma screen tv’s” line - classic!
You can buy the song from iTunes and everywhere else on 29 May 2006 or if you fancy a sing-along you can visit isthistheway.co.uk and join in with the brilliant karaoke version now.
I’m not saying karaoke is brilliant, sometimes it is about as far from brilliant as it gets but this concept IS brilliant because, as I’ve mentioned on BBC Radio Jersey (when doing a world cup song roundup) a football song lives or dies on its chantability.
By providing a karaoke verison with just the music and the words coming up in time through a flash movie on the web, they help people get to know the words even before the song is out to buy and given the recent success of the original it’s a surefire hit - maybe the biggest contender to Hurry Up England.
They say on the site that there is a lyrics sheet but it doesn’t work, so I’ve transcribed them below for you.
(is this the way to) The World Cup
All across the nation
You can taste the expectation
Finish what we started
England the lion hearted
Every single player holds our destiny
And they will all be heros on plasma screen tvs
England win the world cup
Dig deep don’t come unstuck
England win the world cup
Stevie G score for me
England win the world cup
40 years who gives a (Oy!)
England win the world cup
Beckham scores a penalty
Shalala la la la la la
England!
Sha lala lala lala la
England!
We’ve got the greatest football league
Every fan is signing
It’s a war that Englands winning
Lets go down the local
Have a laugh and get all vocal
We’re gonna cruise the group stage
We should win all three
The last sixteen is easy
We’ve got Wayne Rooney.
England win the world cup
Michael Owen is always good luck
England win the world cup
Sven will dance like old nobby
England win the world cup
Forty years who gives a (oy!)
England win the world cup
Then knight them all your majesty
Shalala la la la la la
England!
Sha lala lala lala la
England!
Sha lala lala lala la
We’ve got the greatest football league
Sha lala lala lala la
England!
Sha lala lala lala la
Beckham scores a penalty
